Pumps

Why Do I Need a Pump?

A pump is used in your treatment system to pump the treated water (effluent) out of the system when you can not gravity flow on to the ground. The pump is located in a pump tank that can be attached to the treatment tank or it may be separate from the treatment tank. In either case, the gallons of water that this hank holds is not counted in the volumetric capacity of the treatment tank.

In this tank you should find a chlorination unit, a filter, a highwater alarm system, an effluent pump, and a float attached to the pump.

  • Chlorination unit – effluent is chlorinated to further disinfect the effluent, not to control odor. If you have odor, the treatment plant is not operating properly. Further, if the chlorine in your chlorinator is sitting in water at all times, the chlorinator is not operating properly. Your chlorine tablets will not last as long as they should if this is the case.
  • Filter Unit – in most cases, the pumps used in home wastewater systems, are specified by the manufactures to pump filtered effluent. Failure to use a filter or failure to service the filter, could cause a pump to stop-up and then overhead. This will void the manufacturer’s warranty. The filter and the pump should be cleaned at least every 6 months or more often as necessary.
  • Pump float – this float is attached to the pump and is used to automatically turn the pump off and on.
  • Riser – your pump tank should have a riser to grade. This allows for ease of service and allows your system to meet code. If your tank is not equipped with a riser, they are available as an after-market item from Desoto Concrete Products, Inc.
